How many people do you know who invented their own new medium to apply to the picture plane? This is not only a medium, it is a new abstraction. And, if you take a picture of his pieces with your camera flash you will see it is also a new form of magic contextually bound to our digital age. Stephen Lange uses painted squares and reflective tape in his artwork to create striking visual contrasts and unexpected associations. With his unique approach, Stephen Lange, an innovative Asheville-based artist, redefines the boundaries of art. His work using glass nanosphere tape, that Lange patented, transcends traditional norms and offers viewers a mesmerizing experience.

“Collage lets me do things that painters and other artists can’t. I’m deliberately pitting the collages against each other on a two dimensional plane. Some surfaces are light absorbent and some surfaces are light reflective. This gives me a piece that changes with the available light, time of day, and where the viewer stands. My newest invention (I have four patents) is called a lightmark, and I’m very excited about where it’s taking me. I can embed a second image within the same plane that only light can reveal. This requires the viewer not only to move, but also to seek the hidden image. It can be hung so that it is invisible to the naked eye. It’s a form of modern magic.”
